Shiitake Mushroom Substrate
Premium Organic Wood Blocks

Premium Sterilized Beech Substrate Blocks for Commercial Shiitake Cultivation

The cultivation of Shiitake (Lentinula edodes) demands a substrate of uncompromising purity and nutritional density.

Unlike Agaricus mushrooms that thrive on fermented compost, Shiitake requires a wood-based medium that mimics its natural arboreal habitat.
CNC Substrates produces Sterilized Shiitake Fruiting Blocks designed for professional growers who demand high biological efficiency (BE) and consistent browning.

Substrate Formulation

Our proprietary blend is the result of extensive R&D, optimized for rapid colonization and robust fruiting bodies.

The Substrate Base

Hardwood Sawdust (Beech Blend)

Our Shiitake substrate is built on an 80% hardwood base, utilizing a specific beech blend sourced from sustainably managed local timber.

This selection ensures a consistent lignin and cellulose profile, providing the stable carbon energy required for efficient mycelial degradation and nutrient uptake.

The high-density structure of this sawdust promotes uniform colonization and provides the physical foundation necessary for heavy, high-quality flushes across every production cycle.

The Supplements

Nitrogen Supplements

A 20% inclusion of mixture of organic supplements provides the precise nitrogen density required for high-yield Shiitake production.

These supplements balance the carbon-to-nitrogen (C:N) ratio, fueling the mycelium during the fruiting stage to ensure the development of dense, fleshy caps with optimal shelf life.

This targeted nutrition supports sustained biological efficiency across multiple flushes, resulting in consistent fruit body quality and increased total harvest weight.

The Sterilization Standard

Bulk Steam Technology (121°C)

Standard pasteurization at 60°C is often insufficient for enriched wood substrates, as it may fail to eliminate heat-resistant competitors such as Neurospora and Trichoderma.

Our proprietary bulk sterilization process utilizes 121°C steam to ensure thorough thermal penetration and the complete removal of competitive biological loads.

This intensive treatment creates a clean, selective environment that facilitates rapid mycelial colonization and reduces the risk of crop loss during the sensitive Shiitake incubation period.

Results

This process effectively eliminates competitor organisms, providing a completely clean medium (“blank slate”) for our vigorous Shiitake strains to colonize, while maintaining a lower carbon footprint than pressurized methods.

Product Formats

  • Inoculated (Spawn Run)
    Colonized blocks.
You manage the incubation (browning) phase in your own facility.
Ideal for growers with ample shelf space and incubation control.
  • Ready-to-Fruit (Browned)
    Fully incubated, “browned” blocks.
These blocks have completed their vegetative growth and skin formation.
They are ready to be shocked and fruited immediately upon arrival.
Advantage: Instant turnover; perfect for growers with limited space or those supplying “just-in-time” markets.

Strain Library

We use common commercial standard strains in Europe.

  • Commercial Standard
Focused on a massive, thick stem with a dark, marbled cap.
Excellent storage life and resistance to bruising.
  • Custom Inoculation
Available for large-scale commercial contracts (>10.000 blocks).

Yield Expectations

  • Biological Efficiency (BE)
    55% – 85% over one flush.
  • Yield Data
For a wood-based sterilised 2.5kg block (which contains approximately 1.0kg of dry matter), this results in a total yield of 550 g – 850 g of fresh mushrooms.

Disclaimer
Yield expectations for CNC substrate blocks are indicative only. Actual results may vary depending on the strain, growing conditions, facility design, hygiene, handling, and cultivation management. CNC Substrates cannot guarantee a specific yield, biological efficiency, or number of flushes, as these factors are outside our direct control after delivery.
