Nameko Mushroom Substrate
Organic Wood-Based Blocks
Premium Substrate Blocks for Commercial Nameko Cultivation
The Nameko mushroom (Pholiota nameko) is a staple of East Asian cuisine, prized for its nutty flavor and the unique silky texture provided by its natural gelatinous coating.
Unlike more aggressive species, Nameko is a slower-growing wood-decomposer that requires a highly specific environment to thrive.
CNC Substrates provides premium sterilized blocks that take the guesswork out of this challenging species,
offering growers a reliable path to high-quality “amber” clusters.
Substrate Formulation
Nameko requires significantly higher moisture levels and more stable nitrogen sources than other wood-loving species to produce its characteristic mucilage.
The Substrate Base
Hardwood Sawdust (Premium Beech)
The foundation of our Nameko substrate is a 75% premium beech sawdust base, selected for its specific lignin density and fine-textured fiber.
This hardwood profile facilitates dense mycelial bonding and efficient enzymatic breakdown, providing the stable carbon energy required for consistent primordia formation.
The structural properties of our beech blend also ensure superior moisture retention, a critical factor in meeting the high-humidity requirements of Nameko cultivation.
The Supplements
Nitrogen Supplements
To achieve optimal biological efficiency, the base is enriched with a nutrient supplement blend of organic origin.
This nitrogen-rich addition fuels the rapid colonization phase and supports the development of large, uniform clusters.
By carefully balancing the carbon-to-nitrogen ratio, we ensure the mycelium has the metabolic resources to produce the characteristic polysaccharide coating and vibrant coloration required for premium Nameko harvests.
The Pasteurisation Standard
Bulk Steam Technology (95°C)
Because Nameko substrate is highly supplemented, it requires a rigorous thermal treatment to eliminate competitive pathogens.
Our proprietary Bulk Pasteurisation process (95°C) ensures a clean, selective environment while preserving the wood’s nutritional integrity.
The substrate is hydrated to a precise 65%–68% moisture level using filtered water, providing the elevated water activity necessary for Nameko to thrive while preventing the risks of anaerobic bacteria or block dehydration.
Process
Through our Bulk Pasteurisation system, the beech substrate is treated at 95°C using atmospheric steam.
This process not only eliminates pathogens but also “pre-digests” the wood fibers, allowing the Nameko mycelium to establish a deep, resilient network that can sustain multiple flushes.
Product Formats
- Inoculated (Incubating)
Freshly inoculated blocks. Nameko has a long incubation period (up to 2 months).
This format is ideal for growers with dedicated, cool incubation spaces who want to lower their upfront costs. - Ready-to-Fruit (Fully Colonized
Blocks that have reached full maturity.
Advantage: Nameko can be temperamental during the transition from colonization to fruiting.
Our Ready-to-Fruit blocks have already passed the critical “mycelial maturation” stage, allowing you to move straight to the cooling and high-humidity shock required for pinning.
Strain Library
We use common commercial standard strains in Europe.
- Commercial Standard
Focused on a massive, thick stem with a dark, marbled cap.
Excellent storage life and resistance to bruising. - Custom Inoculation
Available for large-scale commercial contracts (>10.000 blocks).

Yield Expectations
Nameko is typically harvested in multiple flushes. While the individual mushrooms are small, they grow in very dense, heavy clusters.
- Biological Efficiency (BE)
70% – 100% - Yield Data
For a wood-based sterilised 2.5 kg block (appx. 0.8kg – 0.9kg dry matter), growers can expect a total yield of 0.625 kg – 0.875 kg of premium-grade mushrooms over 3 flushes.
Growth Characteristic
Nameko is slower to fruit but offers a long harvest window, often producing consistent flushes for several weeks under the right conditions.
Disclaimer
Yield expectations for CNC substrate blocks are indicative only. Actual results may vary depending on the strain, growing conditions, facility design, hygiene, handling, and cultivation management. CNC Substrates cannot guarantee a specific yield, biological efficiency, or number of flushes, as these factors are outside our direct control after delivery.
