Maitake Mushroom Substrate
Organic Wood-Based Blocks

Premium Sterilized Wood-Based Substrate Blocks for Commercial Maitake Cultivation

The cultivation of Maitake (Grifola frondosa) is widely considered the “gold standard” of a master grower’s repertoire.
Known for its complex, frilled clusters and profound medicinal properties, Maitake is a slow-growing species that requires a highly specific, nutrient-dense hardwood medium.

CNC Substrates provides Sterilized Maitake Fruiting Blocks engineered to support the prolonged vegetative phase and high-energy demands of this prized exotic mushroom.

Substrate Formulation

Maitake is particularly sensitive to substrate density and wood species.
Our blend is optimized to ensure the mycelium has sufficient energy to produce the heavy, overlapping “rosettes” the market demands.

The Substrate Base

Hardwood Sawdust (Premium Oak/Beech blend)

Unlike other species, Maitake shows a clear preference for the high tannin and lignin content found in Oak and Beech.

The Supplements

Specialized Nutrition

We use a precise mix of wheat bran and rice bran to provide the complex carbohydrates and nitrogen required for the slow maturation of the fruiting body.

Hydration: Optimized at 62% to account for the longer incubation period typical of Grifola frondosa.

The Pasteurisation Standard

Bulk Steam Technology (95°C)

Because Maitake has a longer colonization time than Oyster or Shiitake, it is more vulnerable to “creeping” contaminants.

Our proprietary bulk sterilization ensures a “blank slate” environment, protecting your crop throughout its lifecycle.

Process

Maitake mycelium is delicate and easily outcompeted in its early stages.
We utilize our high-efficiency 95°C Bulk Steam system to ensure the core of every block is free from competitive fungi and bacteria.

This method ensures that the vigorous, high-yielding strains we use can colonize the substrate without resistance, leading to uniform pinning and higher biological efficiency across your entire grow room.

Product Formats

  • Inoculated (Incubating)
Freshly inoculated blocks delivered to your facility.
This is the choice for growers with dedicated, low-light incubation rooms capable of maintaining a 45–60 day “spawn run.”
  • Ready-to-Fruit (Fully Colonized)
Maitake can be notoriously difficult to “trigger” into fruiting.
These blocks have been fully incubated in our climate-controlled facility until the first signs of the “brain-like” primordia (mycelial knots) appear.

    Advantage:
Eliminates the risk of fruiting failure; significantly reduces your crop cycle time in the grow room.

Strain Library

We use common commercial standard strains in Europe.

  • Commercial StandaStrain GF-10
A commercial powerhouse known for producing large, dark-grey rosettes with excellent shelf stability.
  • Strain GF-Med
Selected specifically for high concentrations of bioactive compounds, ideal for growers targeting the nutraceutical/extract market.
  • Custom Selection
Specific strains can be inoculated for large-scale contract growers.rd
Focused on a massive, thick stem with a dark, marbled cap.
Excellent storage life and resistance to bruising.

Yield Expectations

Maitake is typically harvested in a single flush.

  • Biological Efficiency (BE)
Maitake is a “one-flush” specialist in most commercial settings. Our blocks are formulated to achieve a Biological Efficiency (BE) of 50% – 80% on the first (and primary) flush.
  • Yield Data
For a 2.5 kg block, growers can expect a single, high-quality cluster weighing between 0.455 kg and 0.750 kg, depending on humidity and airflow management.

Pro-Tip
Maitake loves higher CO2 levels during its initial “brain” stage, but requires a massive increase in fresh air (low CO2) once the fronds begin to fan out.

Disclaimer
Yield expectations for CNC substrate blocks are indicative only. Actual results may vary depending on the strain, growing conditions, facility design, hygiene, handling, and cultivation management. CNC Substrates cannot guarantee a specific yield, biological efficiency, or number of flushes, as these factors are outside our direct control after delivery.
