CNC Substrates Sustainability
Cradle-to-Cradle Mushroom Production

Our Circular Legacy — From the Earth back to the Earth.

At CNC Substrates, we don’t just produce mushroom growing media; we act as a vital link in the global circular economy.
Our business is built on the principle that there is no such thing as “waste”– only resources in the wrong place.

By applying Cradle to Cradle (C2C) principles, we ensure that every ton of substrate we produce adds value to the planet, long after the mushrooms have been harvested.

The Mushroom Cycle: A Masterclass in Circularity

Mushroom cultivation is naturally one of the most sustainable forms of food production. At CNC, we have industrialised this natural process into a perfect loop.

1. Input: Transforming By-Products

We source our raw materials – horse manure, poultry manure,
and cereal straw – from local agricultural partners.

What would otherwise be a challenge for the farming sector to manage,
we treat as high-value energy.

We transform these agricultural by-products into a nutrient-dense,
selective substrate for fungi.

2. Process: Efficiency in Production

Our “Centre of Excellence” continuously innovates
to reduce the environmental footprint of our manufacturing:

  • Bulk Sterilization
Our unique exotic substrate sterilization system is significantly
more energy-efficient than traditional autoclaving, reducing our carbon output.
  • Indoor Fermentation (IVC®)
By moving Agaricus compost production indoors, we capture and
manage emissions while maintaining total control over heat and moisture,
    minimizing resource waste.

3. Output: Healthy Food & Bio-Materials

Our substrates enable growers to produce high-quality, protein-rich food with minimal land use.

Beyond food, our substrates are increasingly used as the foundation
for innovative bio-materials, replacing plastics and leathers with natural mycelium.

4. Return: Closing the Loop

The story doesn’t end with the harvest. Spent Mushroom Substrate (SMS) is a “gold mine” of organic matter.

  • Soil Improvement
Once the mushrooms are picked, the remaining material is returned to the fields as a potent soil improver,
sequestering carbon in the ground and restoring the health of the soil for the next generation of crops
  • True Cradle to Cradle
This is the heart of our philosophy: the waste from one process becomes the food for the next.
