From a Local Cooperative to a Global Substrate Leader
The story of CNC Substrates is one of transformation, driven by a deep-seated passion for mushroom cultivation and a commitment to innovation.
For over seven decades, we have been at the heart of the industry, evolving from a group of dedicated Dutch growers into an internationally operating powerhouse.
1953: The Cooperative Foundation
CNC was founded in 1953 as the Coöperatieve Nederlandse Champignonkwekersvereniging (Cooperative Dutch Growers Association). At its core, the company was built by growers, for growers.
This era established our “Grower DNA” – a practical, no-nonsense approach to agricultural challenges and a shared commitment to quality that remains the cornerstone of our company today.
2020: A Strategic Evolution
In late 2020, a new chapter began when an affiliate of Sun European Partners, LLP acquired the shares of the cooperative. This transition from a cooperative model to a commercial entity was a strategic move designed to take CNC to the “next level.”
While our ownership changed, our name evolved to reflect our future:
CNC now stands for Circular Natural Compost, perfectly aligning our 70-year legacy with our commitment to the circular economy.
2024: Beyond Borders, A Global Ecosystem
Our growth continues as we bridge the gap between our facilities and growers worldwide.
Logistics Mastery
In 2024, we joined forces with DTO (Dutch Trading Office), acquiring their specialized export expertise and patented loading concepts to ensure our “Made in the Netherlands” quality reaches farms in over 45 countries in perfect condition.
European Expansion
We continue to strengthen our production capacity through strategic acquisitions in Poland, including the recent addition of Kompostpal production assets in 2025.
2025: Unifying the Exotics Division
To meet the booming global demand for specialty mushrooms, we have strategically unified the industry’s leading specialists under the CNC Substrates umbrella.
CNC Exotic Mushrooms
Originally a partnership, CNC acquired full ownership in 2025 to centralize our specialized wood-based substrate production in Heerewaarden.
Veme Specials & Verbruggen Substraat
In March 2024, CNC acquired a majority interest in Veme Specials and Verbruggen Substraat. This brought decades of pioneering expertise in straw-based substrates and innovation into our group, creating a complete portfolio for exotic mushroom growers.
